Oral history interview with Bailey Nieder, Feb. 28 and Mar. 8, 1987.

Nieder discusses his father, Mandel Nieder, and his grandfather, Mechel Nieder. Mechel left Galicia in 1886, first becoming a farmer in Illinois, then an Alaskan goldpanner, then settling in Seattle. Nieder tells of his father Mandel's education in Seattle schools, his pacifist activism, and his citation for bravery as a World War II ambulance driver. He also relates that his father helped found the Menorah Society at the University of Washington and the Evergreen chapter of B'nai B'rith. Nieder discusses his own involvment in Zionist youth organizations and the Aliyah Bet --clandestine immigration of Eastern European Jewish refugees into Palestine. He also recounts the founding of the Seattle Committee for Israeli-Palestinian Peace (SCIPP).
